Melts in your mouth mackerel

20 Jan

I totally lost some of you fish haters with this title, didn’t I? But since you’re already here, please hear me out.

This simple dish is often found in Korean restaurants and is usually served in a stone plate to keep it warm. Mackerel is full of good oils and tastes great. It’s buttery and totally melts in your mouth!

The Korean grocery store actually cuts the fish for you so that you don’t have to deal with the fish guts. After my traumatic chicken experience, I was happy to let someone do the cleaning for me. ;) This is so easy to make that I feel like things that taste this good shouldn’t be done so quickly!

Recipe: Korean style pan fried mackerel

Ingredients:

4 pieces of fish (about 1.5 pounds)
1 cup of all purpose flour
3 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil
1 lemon
Salt

Procedure:

1. Rinse fish with cold water. Pat dry. Sprinkle with salt. (Looks weird, right? Don’t let it get to you!)

2. Add flour to a medium sized plate. Spread to a thin coat.

3. Coat fish pieces in flour on both sides.

4. Add oil. Heat up a pan to high heat for 1 minute. Lower to medium heat.

5. Add fish pieces. Cook all at once if possible. If not, cook in two batches.

6. Cook fish for 6-7 minutes on each side.

7. Squeeze a lemon over the fish right before serving.

I ate this with some Dwen Jang Jjigae and let me tell you – it was the perfect Korean meal for a cold wintery night.

Give it a try and let me know how it goes!

Update: Fish contains bones but there is an easy way around it. Using chopsticks, make an insert in two parallel lines along the fish. Once you’ve done that, you will see the bones and it will be easy to remove. If you do swallow a bone by accident, eat a spoonful of rice and it will help get it down.

let me tell u, this is one of my favorite korean foods. simple, but i like the salty, fishy, and meatiness of good old go-deung-uh. next time, how about a recipe for 고등어 조림? now THAT reminds me of home cooking!

I make a weekly pilgrimage to the local Korean buffet on Thursdays to eat this fish. I suppose I ought to try to make it now. I’ve got doenjang jjigae down, and that would really rock with this dish! Thanks for the recipe :)

Please do give it a try – once you do it, you will probably want to make it a lot more often!
