Make pumpkin spiced lattes at home

3 Nov

At Starbucks about a month ago, I asked the barista what a pumpkin spiced latte tasted like, since I’ve never had one. She was kind enough to make me one to try. The combination of warm frothed milk, pumpkin, earthy cinnamon was perfect against the darkness of espresso laced with a slight hint of vanilla!

After that day, I was hooked.

I tried it again at two different Starbucks locations, but it never tasted as good as the first one I had. After some research, I discovered that the barista that day was filling in for someone else and nobody knew which store she was from!!! I don’t quite recall her face or name, and I’m not about to go to the 10Starbucks locations that surround my work office. =(

Plus, lattes are expensive. So I decided to try making one at home by using some freshly roasted coffee beans from Coffee Labs Roasters, Inc.

Note: You will need an espresso machine for this recipe. If you don’t have one, get a shot of espresso from your local coffee shop and heat up the milk on the stove top over very low heat until milk becomes hot and frothy. Also, make sure the frothing cup is cold before you start.

Recipe: Pumpkin spiced lattes
Makes 2 (8 oz.) servings

Ingredients:

1.5 cup of milk (your choice – I like skim)
2 shots of espresso
3 tablespoons of pumkin puree
1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
1 teaspoon of cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon of nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon of brown sugar
1/4 teaspoon of ground cloves
Whipped cream (optional)

Procedure:

1. Combine pumpkin puree, cinnamon, nutmeg, brown sugar and ground cloves in a blender.

2. Brew 2 shots of espresso.

3. Froth milk until hot and foamy, about 3-4 minutes. (My favorite part!!!!!)

4. Combine espresso and milk in a cup. Slowly stir in pumpkin puree.

5. Add vanilla.

6. Top with whipped cream, if you want/have it.

What I noticed from making pumpkin hot cocoa is that the use of actual pumpkin (which may or may not be present in the SBUX version) is what gives it an intense pumpkin flavor with some earthy notes. It’s just so good! I had my first pumpkin latte of the year a few weeks ago, and thankfully it didn’t taste soapy like I remembered it tasting. Love this stuff!

The pumpkin spice latte is my favorite drink ever! The frapuccino is quite decadent as well ;) Thanks for sharing this recipe! I have instant espresso powder, do you think that would work?

Technically, since it’s a latte, you’d need a shot or two of espresso. But I’ve also improvised by brewing a cup of coffee with 1/2 the amount of water and same amount of ground coffee that you would use for a full cup. The flavor is not AS strong, but it will do!

I love pumpkin lattes! I got one a few days ago, but I didnt appreciate the price. I’ll be making some myself even though I don’t have an espresso maker.
