Recipe: Brussels Sprouts with bacon

24 Sep

Every once in a while, I get together with my friend C and we make dinner together and  spend some quality time without the hefty restaurant tab. Plus, we can stay as long as we want. :) So while discussing our dinner menu for that day, I asked C if she liked Brussels Sprouts. Turns out, she’s never had them before!

Remember the last time I made Brussels Sprouts? I had David Chang’s recipe, which made them taste so delicious, and I became a lover of Brussels Sprouts ever since.

Since C lives near me, I decided to prepare the dish at home beforehand. I remember it being a very warm summer day, and I did not have the desire to turn on my oven. So I grilled them over my cast iron skillet, to get the golden roasted flavor. Plus I used a little bit of bacon fat, which is SO healthy!

Party food: bacon wrapped potatoes

11 May

Can you tell that I’m now officially obsessed with Sriracha sauce? To be more specific, Sriracha sauce mixed with other condiments? If you think about it, there are a lot of possibilities! Sriracha with Hoisin is also another clear winner, which is a must-have when eating Vietnamese Pho. Can you think of other winning combinations?

Let’s face it – bacon wrapped anything is not earth shatteringly complicated or new, but one thing’s for sure – it is freaken delicious! And I’m sure your party guests will ask you for more!

CSA: Pasta carbonara with arugula & watermelon salad

20 Aug

This classic Italian dish made of bacon, cheese and parsley was so scrumptious that I was really, genuinely sad when I was done and even wanted to eat it again the day after. I paired this pasta dish with arugula from my CSA share this week with some sweet, crunchy, seedless watermelon.

One thing to note – it’s important to time everything so that the sauce and the pasta are ready around the same time, as the heat from the pasta will help to cook the eggs. The water boiled too quickly for me, so I am suggesting that you start the sauce first, then make the pasta second.

A special shoutout to my cousins, who visited all the way from VA :)  One of them did a great job helping me wash the arugula and dice the parsley, while the other did an even better job of helping by eating!

Pan seared scallops with asparagus and bacon

27 Jan

This is a combination of two separate recipes I’ve seen on my food blog reading journey. The scallop dish was adapted from Recipezaar, while the bacon + asparagus is from the infamous food blog, Serious Eats.

My alertness level wasn’t as high as it should have been, after a long day of work and play, I set my sights on this meal beginning at 10 pm. That’s right. Can you imagine my neighbors, getting ready for bed and then thinking, why do I want to eat bacon all of a sudden?

I blame the slightly burnt scallops on myself. It had a bitter aftertaste that I didn’t care for too much. The heat was turned up way too high. What I did enjoy, however, was the flavors of the crispy bacon with the tangy asparagus, paired with the softness of boiled eggs.
